LOL ! Watch the heat, I think it is getting to you. It was 105 here today. Just had a thought, maybe your lizard will do your power steering install ! Roadrunners eat and feed my lizards to their babies. They love lizard, taste like chicken ! Lizard also makes good boots & belts. rocmoc n AZ

Good to hear from you Mike. rocmoc n AZ

It is dry most of the time but 5% of the time I am making a river crossing, yes the Santa Cruz River has water in it all the time, and a few stream crossings in the wet seasons. PLUS when I hookup with the rest of the crowd at the Jamborees there is water. We had quite a bit of water crossings this year. YOU did make me laugh, I have never seen a Lizard sneeze. Make a phone call and sell insurance but never sneeze LOL ! rocmoc n AZ

Side note anyway, I can't mount down at the rack because the unit & shaft will hit my gas tank. Remember I have the front tank and it hangs down in the front and would block any installation down in that dirty, wet location, LOL! rocmoc n AZ

Popped the hood and this is what I AM DOING ! I am mounting my unit under the dash. I am not changing the LONG steering shaft at all. I am putting the power steering unit between the top U-Joint and the small shaft the steering wheel is bolted to. There are two bolts under the dash that holds that shaft in place. I am moving that mount towards the driver enough to allow the power steering unit to be mounted in-line. No changes to any of the angles on the U-joints or shaft alignments. If the steering wheel is too close, there is plenty of shaft that can be shorten AT the Steering Wheel mounting plate (of course I will not cut anything until after a test drive). It is just a flat plate that is weld in place. This setup will leave all the shafts & U-joints as strong and as well designed as it is when it came from the factory. LOL ! Kinarfi, you should not have to redesign you tool bin. You may have to pull it out to do the work but the power steering unit is tucked up under the dash. Just my humble plan. Of course it will be weeks before I get to it. I will try to do it in late Oct., first block of free time. Also took the time to look at and move the steering arms and rack. Only slack I have is in the quality rack. Everything else is tight ! rocmoc n AZ

Going to make two points. Point ONE, So you guys, mainly Kinarfi as I believe he is the only one to layout a plan, are going to mount the power steering unit near the rack. Correct ? Why that location? Point TWO, I am looking at installing high at the support bar where the U-joints are behind dash. Reason; the power steering unit is electrical and the unit & all components would be less likely to get WET ! U-joints & shaft already take the load from turning wheels, no diff to existing system. Thoughts ! rocmoc n AZ

AGREE, agree !

Rick sending you a PM for the PDF file Thanks, rocmoc n AZ

Welcome. Most electrical problems on the Trooper start with moisture. Being in AZ, I am one of the few with the exception of the under-sized fan fuse. Hang in there electrical bugs can drive you nuts ! rocmoc n AZ

Someone needs to open a shop, LOL ! My classic car club has shop days where we could all meet and work on the cars together sharing knowledge & tools at a member's shop or house. When you going to have the first one Lenny ? LOL ! Forget the Jamborees, we need to all just meet/camp at Lenny's or Jeff's and have a fix-it session/Jamboree. Just back online as we had a heck of a monsoon storm roll thu with hail, wind & rain yesterday afternoon. Knocked out power (short time) & cell tower (for hours) and we are all wireless now so put us off-line. And they only gave us a 10% chance of rain yesterday. 40% over the weekend and barely anything, LOL ! rocmoc n AZ

Have only had to use mine once and it worked ! Problem was I was too far from a good anchor, LOL. Had to wait until a Jeep came along and let me hook to the back of him. Pulled me off the ledge, we were high-centered. This was during the early stage of ownership and still finding the limits. Now we would just crash over the same ledge. I don't even carry my wench with me anymore , just extra weight. Mine is the early that went into the hitch server in the front or rear. rocmoc n AZ

Mine arrived. I am impressed, looks like a nicely put together unit. Good job Rick & Plumber. rocmoc n AZ

2scoops, I am far from being an expert and am always looking for the best info. If you find something, let us know. I do feel what we have isn't much better than the ropes I use on my downhill racers as a kid. I believe the rack on my INEX Legends racecar would will work and is a very good rack. I will follow up on this more. rocmoc n AZ

I install the nuts per Lenny's instructions. I do it exactly as developed! My rear diff did not have safety wire. They had bend edge clips around the head of the bolts from the factory. Still have to do the front so do not know what it has. rocmoc n AZ

The one that fits, LOL! Just had to do it. Haven't got that far yet. Will take measurements & fit to location. Maybe someone else will do it first and have it all figured out. I doubt I will even get to it until Nov or next Spring. Too much going on! I still have to put the diff upgrade kit in front diff and install them both. That is the next project on the Trooper, right behind everything else on the house & business. I will have if done along with doors by next June for the UT, ID, WY trip. Remember Kinarfi, we are going to Killpecker, WY. http://www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/field_offices/Rock_Springs/rec/dunes.html http://www.duneguide.com/sand_dune_guide_killpecker.htm rocmoc n AZ

Throwing this out there so you know what I have planned. IMHO the steering rack in the Trooper is a piece of cr*p. I am replacing my steer rack at the same time I install my power steering unit. Here is one of the site I am looking at for a replacement rack, http://www.dansperformanceparts.com/buggy/susp/buggysusp%20rack&pinion.htm This will get rid for the noise, slop and general problems in the steering while making it easier for the the power steering unit. Better the rack, the better the steering unit will preform. Tracking my steering unit, it is sitting in Phoenix. Arrived yesterday mid-day. Just don't understand why they let an Item sit because it arrives too early. Bad business in my opinion. rocmoc n AZ

YUP agree !

OK, everything is GOOD ! They miss-spelled gmail when my email address was typed into their system. Mine shipped same as the rest and should arrive Monday. Woohooo! rocmoc n AZ

Kinarfi, have you received a email ? I am wondering if Casey got my email wrong.

I did lower the rear when I made the repair. Angle on the CV Joint is much less. Only way I can think the Suzuki transfer case would work is to install forward of the engine and drive from only one side of the trans. Routing of the new drivelines would be the major problem. rocmoc n AZ

Anyone receive a ship notice yet ? rocmoc n AZ

The bearing should not come out with your fingers. You should have to use a puller of some sort. I had one hub exactly the same way as Kinarfi. I put the new bearing in and have been running it. What also will happen is it will give you neg. camber. Walk around to the rear of your Trooper and if you have neg. camber, your hubs are wearing. When I pulled my bearing, they were fine but I put new in anyway. The bearings & design of our hubs is the same as what is used on BMW cars only BMW uses HIGH quality material. They also run the same bearings as the Trooper does stock with a min of 40,000+ miles. We used ball bearing in our race cars instead of roller for less rolling resistance with no problem. rocmoc n AZ

SilverBullet, need to start working on a Hub upgrade for us. Either new Hub of better material or a upgrade like Lenny's. Jeff's problem is the same as mine. Well at least one of them, LOL! I saw what was going on with his Trooper when I was following him at Hanksville and knew it was a matter of time. rocmoc n AZ

It would be full-time lower gearing but the gear reduction unit from the VW bus trans-axle mounted on each hub. When we were into dune buggies, if we wanted a lower geared buggy we ran the bus trans-axle. The gear reduction unit is a bolt on unit to the regular trans-axle. Maybe it could be adapted! OR, maybe a gear reduction unit on each driveline. I like this idea best. The unit is strong enough. rocmoc n AZ
