  1. I have no idea why this happened, I always thought I took things semi easy, if I did it on this trip, look at the 2 videos on my shock test trip up Mary Ellen Gulch. I was in 4X4 all the time and locker occasionally. I was on my way out when I stopped by pulling off the road uphill and using the Ebrake. When I start up again, I backed up and heard a pop, my buddy, Jim, said 'that didn't sound good" and I agreed and we went on down the road, Later, As I went up a slight hill, it didn't feel like I had the traction I should and I saw the front wheel kicking out dirt while spinning. I put in 2 wheel drive and let the clutch out, NOTHING!!! back into 4X4 and head for home in my front wheel drive vehicle. Had to keep it under 10 MPH or the rear drive line would start flopping around, got home, took photos and called it a day. Went for a ride up Mary Ellen Gulch to test my new shock absorbors and they worked great, but I sheared my out put shaft, I wasn't under much of load, so I think it had to have cracked else where and then maybe things had bound up when I pulled off the road and caused it to fail the rest of the way. http://travel.websho...583118836BfphkV Yep broke #5

Decided to add to existing thread rather than start new one, I got my new FOA shocks on and started out to give them and try and my wife says, "let's go eat first" , so we did, started raining as we ate and by the time we got back home, we were wet! the only real test so far was a speed bump, but I was impressed, by it, more soon, as it's supposed to rain tomorrow and help put out our 8 wild fires burning here in Utah. I will post an update after I have driven on them. Ordered online on 06-18-2012($563.25)(I over paid by $40.00 because I ordered 2.5s instead of 2.0), received shocks 07-12-2012, received springs 07-13-2012 and finished mounting and cleaning up around 5:00 and went to eat. I had one issue with the way they mount and sent the following message to FOA, I just bought a set of FOA shocks for the front of my Trooper because I think I get a good shock for a good price and I can tear them down and do my own revalving and maintenance. Here's the problem, the bolts holding our shock on are 15mm and so is the hole in the shock mount. If I put a 1/2" bolt in the 15mm hole, the bolt moves up and down and wears the hole out until the mount breaks, I crash and I die, maybe. When I bought my first set of FOA for the rear, they came with a spacer to make up the difference between the 15mm bolt and the 1/2" bolt, not so on this order, so I found the extra spacers from my first order, cut them to size and finished the installation. If I hadn't saved the spacers from my first order, I don't think I could have finished the job, extra washers would not have done the job. FOA, you need to have these spacers for buggies that have the 15mm bolts for mounting shocks. The other thing about how these mount, and I think I like it, is that they don't squash the shock mounts in on the sides of the shock. I got a call from them the next day and the method they said to use was get some 1/2" washers and weld them on the out of the mounting brackets, I think I would use some more substantial than washers. I think you will have the same problem with any of the other brands of shocks also. Also, since Joyners make up such a small percentage of their business, stocking the shims doesn't really make sense. Here's is the first of several photos of how I mounted my shocks, and the last of several which shows how I ended up mounting the reservoirs. (FYI) The Blue box is where I carry my tools and spare parts. PS. My rear shocks are still doing just fine and I expect my fronts to work just as well, I'm ordering a couple of sets of their shims so I can dial the rebound and compression dampening in after I see how the current valving works.

Not really, but I've always been real busy when it did and probably didn't notice as I was probably trying to avoid hitting something If I remember correctly, you mounted yours up close to the dash, I mounted mine mid span on the connecting rod which may have put it in a place where it gets more cooling, so by the time I turn it off and back on, it's already cooled enough that turning it off and back on doesn't really matter, not sure. It was your post that got me thinking and tied the subjects together for me. I'll have to pay closer attention in the future. Kinarfi Just got an email that my shocks have shipped YaY
  8. Additional note to what 2scoops said, I have a power switch on mine and I have found that when it quits working, thermal shut down, I presume, I can turn it off and back on and it seems to work again, right away.
  9. Tempted to Pin this topic so we can warn each other of what NOT to do and things that shouldn't be done. My most recent was trying to fix a leak in the gas tank. When I put my skid plate on, I used long bolts so I could get them all started, then run all the bolts in tight, I checked the clearances and all was good, then ran over some rock and drove the long bolts up against the gas tank which deformed the tank and caused a leak where the aluminum could not flex. When I went to fixing it, I assumed the leak was where the bolt had hit the tank, WRONG! When I filled it back up, still had the leak, so I pulled it out and blew some air into the tank and started squirting it with soapy water so I could see the leak in the bubbles, the pressure was too great so all I did was feel the the air, no bubbles, but I found the leak, plugged it with JB Weld and put in in and filled it up again, This time the leak was in a different area and worse. Pulled the tank again and found the and patched it and put it back in and went to Panquich, Utah to do some riding with Lenny, I left the tank empty until I got there (so did Lenny, only I filled my tank, Lenny didn't and ran out of gas ). It appears that I forgot to take a picture of the fix using JB Weld, the two part epoxy mix, what I did was mix the epoxy, cover the leak and apply vacuum which pulled the epoxy inside and filling the hole from inside to outside. Rode for over a 100 miles and not leaks. Lesson Learned!!!! Don't use compressed air to pressurize the aluminum fuel tank, use the exhaust of a vacuum cleaner. I swelled the top and bottom, probably the sides too, and the swelling caused the welded seems to stretch and open, Dumb, Really Dumb!!!!! Klinarfi

  11. worked on the throw out bearing noise today, I grabbed the lever that is attached to the clutch master cylinder and pulled on it to collapse the master cylinder, then had my wife start the trooper and try to shift, It wouldn't disengage the clutch and go into gear - so I tried it and pumped the clutch a few times and all seems fine now. It's like the throw out bearing moved closet to the clutch finger and didn't return to it's home position and then started touching the fingers and spinning the whole bearing on it's shaft, sounded bad, but it doesn't seem to be doing it now.   12. Looking at pictures that I can find of the throw out bearing, it appears that it rides on a stationary shaft and only touches the clutch finger when engaged. Mine has making noises like it in contact when not engaged and sound bad and some times it still sound bad when engaged. Any one have any ideas. kinarfi

Jack the front up, leave it in gear with the e brake on, put the locker in and have some one turn the wheels while you bring the 4 x 4 in so you can see how much lever it takes, if it takes most of it, you're probably just barely engaged. Another thing to do while the front is up is put in 4 x 4 with it in gear and e brake on and with out the locker, now have someone turn the front wheels as you bring the lockers in and see where they engage. The bang could also be them popping out.

Evidently, My Trooper has never used the idle adjustment and I didn't think it had one, but this is what it looks like, and now that I have it engaged and working, i had to make several other adjustments also. I had to shorten the cable by 1/4", I must have been idling on the IAC all along because I'm certain that the butterfly used to close completely. Anyway, I now idle again and that is GOOD. by the way, those photos were taken using a mirror, Kinarfi
  15. I think my IAC may have died, does any one have one they are not using that I can borrow or buy to see if it's the IAC or some other problem. These Troopers don't have an idle adjustment screw, do they? Any other suggestions Kinarfi
  16. Thanks Lenny, just talked to FOA and they said to order the 14" and I went with 200# because I think 150# would be too light and they don't have the 175#. I ordered them and they should be here in about 3 weeks, cost around 555 with shipping.

  18. Decided to get some new shocks & springs for the front of my Trooper, I'm going with the FOA 6" which has 18.3" eye to eye, so, I want the 18" X 200# spring, RIGHT????? After I get that info, all I need to do is get the width of the shock mount and get it ordered. Thanks, Kinarfi
  19. Fenders, on my last trip out to Moab with 2 scoops, I came home minus a fender, so here's what I decided to try this time around, so far, so good, took for a 30 mile ride yesterday evening. Would NOT work for Mudding, but since I hate mud, they should work fine for me. I think it will let the radiator breath better and hopefully have less dirt & dust getting into the engine compartment.   22. Does any one think that air shocks that can be pumped up for higher clearances when needed and have little or no effect when not pumped up would work or is it a dumb idea? I'm thinking I can have a nice soft suspension for roads and then pump it up for the rough stuff. kinarfi
  23. Yea, like 2scoops said, the temp was nice when the wind was blowing and cool when it was calm. We had plenty of slick rock, enough to last me for a while and plenty of sand. On the way home I stopped at a place called Woodside (ghost gas station, don't know if it was ever big enough to be called a ghost town) about 21.5 miles up hi way 6 from I-70 and headed off up CR129 and a short ways in saw 11 animals cross the road then stopped again at White River for a couple of nights before coming home to clean up. Met up with 2Scoops while he was travelling to Moab yesterday and got his master cylinder and went home and put it on, Left brake caliper refused to engage, so I took it off and took it all apart and scrubbed the piston and the bore with Scotch Brite pad and pulled the square o-rings out and pulled some shreds off and put it all back together and it's working great now. Seems like when the problem started, the brake was stuck on and got it hot, there was some gum or something holding the piston from operating. To get the piston out, I blew air into the brake line connection and it popped right out. Also disassembled and cleaned the caliper holder and lubricated it. Now that I have the emergency brake working again, I'm going to Moab also. Any one else coming to Moab? 2Scoops is at the KOA, I may be there or out past in flats some where.
  25. Here's what I did, works great for me and the wife, got another box up front too. Carries the jack, saws, blanket, sweat shirts, paper towels, wipees, my canes, emergency and some other stuff. Bought a couple sheets of Coraplast to make it out of, it's lasted 2 years so far.
