I just found this on another messageboard. I wonder if the Commando is having the same problems as the Trooper.

Post subject: New style diffs to replace in 2006 CommandoPosted:

Posts: 1 Just rec'd 2 new style rear diffs from joyner to replace in the 2006 650 Commando. Need to know how to take the cv cups off old style rear diff that need to be installed in new diffs. Is there any special tools needed or do you have to hold your mouth just right??!!! Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks much

I think your find that the Commando gears in the front and rear diffs where not meshing correctly. In other words one gear would ride on the top of the teeth instead off fitting the gap fully. The result was the tips of the teeth snapped off. Not too dissimilar, different problems with same result. All new Commando from the middle of last year have correctly shimmed diffs.

Cheers Mike.

Just put a new diff in mine. when I opened up my diff to check for sheared bolts like Kinarfi had, I found a completely mis-shimmed differential and I could see that the pinion gear wasn't correct, In my case the pinion gear was not only too far away from the ring gear but was also pushed in too far torwards the center of the ring gear. This looks to me like it's causing the tips of the pinion to take more then it's fair share of the stress and thus ending up fracturing chips off. I think proper alignment of the pinion gear axeually in relation to the ring gear is even more damaging then improper gear tooth clearance. My teeth were chipped, thus the new differential. Fortunately, I purchased the 3yr extended warranty just as it came available and they covered it. Joyner got a diff out and I received it in 1 day.

Lenny,

Did you open up the new diff?

Definitely did. Found the same problems. I installed my diff kit in it giving it much stronger bolts and better security from bolts comming loose. I also re-shimmed it for clearance and proper pinion to ring gear alignment. Real happy with how it came out. See my post under Diff blowup.

Lenny, it was my understanding that the Commando diff problems were just the mis-shimmed teeth on the gears. I just wonder that in your case that caused the gears to walk away from their settings slightly making them to far away from the ring rear if that is possiable. I don't think that happened with the Commandos, maybe they snapped because the strength was less than the Troopers. Anylizer might have the inside word with that issue.

Cheers Mike.

I would really like to see Joyner step up and take care of the Diff problems. By using bolts of poor quality and the diffs not being made correctly aren't they responsible? Ours is parked until we get Lennys fix it kit. I think that this is a major problem and the second one (the drive-line was the first) in the last year that is either poor workmanship or lack of quality in parts and design. All I can say is thanks to Lenny for all his hard work in keeping all of us on the road.

As with any forum you join, there is a requirement for an obligatory introduction... and that seems fair. How else do you get that first post in there without jumping in with some stupid question right out of nowhere?

Hi. I'm Space Ghost. Well, not really, but that was my call sign on my last deployment before an IED made me non-deployable, and I an now retired/disabled, and living on my wonderful VA disability. I did almost 28 years in total between the Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard. 1 deployment with the Reserve (Desert Storm) and 3 with the Guard (1 pre, and 2 post 9/11)

Married (going on 30 years) one of each. (both out of the nest)

Just picked up my first side by side a couple days ago. A 2020 Can-Am Defender HD10 DPS 6x6.

It's in pretty good shape, but as you can probably tell, it's sitting a bit high. Former owner put a lifting collar on the shocks.

The good = almost 17" of ground clearance. (30" tires)
The bad = incredibly steep driveline angles, and a pretty stiff ride.

      They will be coming off.

Other than that... clean as a pin and appears very well maintained.

Looking forward to seeing what this forum can bring, and hoping I can bring something in return.

When we first heard the noise, we immediately stopped driving it...at first we thought it might be a linkage issue, but after further inspection looks like the sound/jolting is coming from the rear diff. Took a video below...
Anyone know what is creating the diff to skip/jump like this? We drained the diff oil and didn't look terrible, no metal.
Other info that may be useful:
      1400 miles on it
      Recently tightened the E brake
P.s. never posted on this forum before, let me know if the video does not work

      Hi everyone
Recently purchased a 2020 T-Boss 410 in what appears to be good condition
First time with this machine – I also have a diesel Kawasaki Mule which so far seems a better machine
It didn’t start and idle well particularly from cold when I got it and sudden take off ( now solved with new clutch parts ) was all or nothing !
I have replaced the idle valve, throttle position sensor, had the injector professionally checked ( ok) and also the pressure sensor this is a fuel injection engine, also plug and lead etc!
It still doesn’t run well and when starting I have to hold revs for a while as it wont idle but stall, thereafter its better and I have rebooted the ecu which has improved it
When I go to start it clicks as if there is a hydraulic lock and wont return after two or three attempts it then does turn over and start bit I need to give it a bit of throttle to start – is this normal ?
Is there adjustment for the air idle valve ?
The engine seems rough and with vibration compared to other engines I have been used to but some say this is normal?
I haven’t changed the Lambda sensor yet, anyone know how much difference this might make ( I have a new Bosch universal to fit )
Any advice very much appreciated, thanks

Looking for information on installing a OBD port or a lite to read codes in ECM.
I can not find a OBD port or a lite to read codes on this R2 with 800cc.
I have code readers and adapters for most ATV's. From what I've found so far. They don't have a connection for to read codes. I may be wrong. That's why I'm asking.
This R2 has had new IAC, TPS, MAP, fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump replaced. This was done by neighbor to try to stop surging. It still surges on start up and then settles down. But once you hit the accelerator it revs up to 2000+ rpm and stays till you block off IAC port in throttle body with finger. Once you do that it once again settles down and idles perfectly.
I want to know what the ECM is reading to help dio it.
This joyner is the first one I've run across. Well second one in a week. (my neighbors 2 of them) The other was a trooper with the 1100cc chery motor that had been setting for years. After cleaning up the fuse box connections. It runs like a top. Had to replace all gages with aftermarket gages. Water, oil, gas, amp. Only problem one was the water temp using original sending unit. Had to install 150 ohm resistor on the input wire to get it to read correctly + - 5 degrees. Close enough. Gas sending unit was/is for a boat tank 6" tall. All SS so it should last forever.
      thanks Dan D. aka staind

My vehicle is (at least not yet) not a UTV, however, it is an ATV, A 2001 Kawasaki Prairie 400.

BTW, That's Brandy, my former PTS/TBI service dog on the bike. RIP old girl. She's internet famous. Perhaps you've seen her before...

The reason I'm here is that Arthritis is starting to set into my wounds and my mobility is getting worse. I will be selling the quad bike soon, and going with a SXS, and have selected a Can Am model as the replacement, so I figured I had better get on board a forum somewhere. Just put in for my Guard retirement, and will be very soon looking to get into a Commander 6x6.

Wouldn't mind having the Limited with the Hvac system, but am really not sure it's worth the extra 10 grand or not. Plus it's 500 pounds heavier, and I prefer the doors off in nice weather. It's so much easier when working in the yard, and so much more fun when on the trail.

Anyway, I'm here now, so it will help me research more and make up my mind. Plus once I have it, I'll be able to share stories about it and of course, continue to learn more, as it will be my 1st sxs. Still have time before I get my retirement. Takes a good 90 days at least according to the guy I talked to... Typical government efficiency... lol.
