I just purchaced a Trooper last night and I have two major disapointments and wondering if I made a big mistake but hoping there is an easy fix.

First the brakes, I expected 4 wheel disk brakes to be way better than this, I really have to stand hard on them to make anything close to a fast stop. This now worries me on holding on hills when we go trial riding or my wife and kids being able to stop or hold it when they waant to drive . Is there anything I can do to make the brakes do a lot better?

Second the steering - I did not realize until I drove it around last night but the turning radius SUCKS! My F-350 crew cab turns tighter. Steering seems nice and tight with no play in the wheel but the room you need to turn around it terrible. It does seem to turn a little tighter to the right then the left. Im now afraid its going to be a nothing but a hassle to take it trail riding. Is there anything that I can do to make this better?

P.S. I did do a search before posting but did not see anything that really helped me.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Welcome Zorro!

There was an upgrade to the original 50 units' brakes. Maybe you have one of them and never got the upgrade. Even at that the brakes are not the greatest. Even at that have never had a problem on the trail and I have NOT put my upgraded brakes on yet.

YUP that is the turning radius but you will be surprised how little it effects you off-road riding. Give it a chance first!

A little explanation about the steering mechanism, the wheels are a tad back from the differential so the CV starts to bind on the wheel turning inward. If you want to balance and get all turn you can get, read Steering Linkage Problem - UTV BOARD - Side X Side and UTV Forum and Laser Alignment - UTV BOARD - Side X Side and UTV Forum and then ask questions if you decide to go for it. I didn't reread everything, so I don't remember just what was said. If you decide to go for it. I will be glad to post how I would do it.

Welcome Zorro,

What year is the trooper? If used possibly seller did some brake work and not bled them correctly.

I agree with rocmoc as for the brakes and turning.I have the T-4 Trooper and have climbed some pretty steep hills with four people(not the smallest of crowd)in it and had to hold it on the hill with no problems.even coming down comes to a stop.I was worried about the steering also but have not had any real issues on the trail. Wait until you get it on the trail and give it a chance.

I want to first thank all you guys for responding, it is reassuring to me to have the support !!!

It is a 2008 street legal. I was told it has had the upgraded steering that took out all the play it had in the steering wheel. Also the guy just picked it up from American Powersports last night with a complete upgraded rear end with the new the bolts that wont back out. and told it has the upgraded axles. I know it has a lot of other extra stuff added like fender bars, windshild, wipers etc and it has 1100 miles on it. From what I can tell by visual inspection the brake pads will need to be replaced soon. When I hit the brakes the pedal seem hard as a rock. Currently has 15 inch wheels and 23" tires DOT. but also got an additional set of 14" wheels with 27" off road tires.

The roter look very good and smooth so i am wondering with 1100 miles would this still be the original pads or whould the have been changed a few times already?

I was looking at the steering today and the shaft that pushes through the steering box seems to be maxed either way I turn it, looks like they could have added an inch to each end to make it turn sharper but its quite possible I am an idiot.

I am very excited to see how it does on the trails and planing a trip somewhere in Texas or surounding states that have nice trails that cater to this UTV and the quads. If any any of you guys got any suggestions where to go around here that would be great.

I just needed to make sure this was normal or not.

It also has the overhead light bar, the lights worked when I bought it but soon as we turned them on 5 minutes afterwards it blew the fuse. There was a 15amp fuse blown, is this the correct fuse amp to run these lights? Seems small to me to run 4 lights.

Thanks again to all of you for your help and support!!!

You say you have 1100 miles on it, it may be 1100 kilometers. I have the 2008 and it is in kilometers. As for "I was looking at the steering today and the shaft that pushes through the steering box seems to be maxed either way I turn it, looks like they could have added an inch to each end to make it turn sharper but its quite possible I am an idiot." I thought the same and when I started to try to do something about it, I found the CV started bumping/binding almost immediately upon adding more turning capabilities, Pretty sure they are giving us all they can.

Welcome to the forum and stay in touch with us all now that your one of us.

i looked at the manual for my 09 and it shows a blue fuse(best i can tell looks like it says 10 amp on it)for the spot lights.

I will have to take a closer look at the speedo. I powerwashed it last night and see the seats each hold a pool of water, thinking about drilling some holes in the seats to give the water a place to drain, any of you done that?

I just tilt them forward towards the windsheild and use a bungy cord to hold it while it drys then wipe em down.

Your right it reads in Kilometers thats even better from what I looked up its 64 miles for every 100 Kilometers so it has around 700 miles on it from what I understand.

Too funny I did not know they even tilted forward. I'll have to spend some time with her in the shop and get to know this thing up close.

Thanks

Do you have an owners manual? If not, PM me with your email address and I'll dend you a pdf file of it. By the way, I have 2 brake calipers on each wheel for better stopping power. Havn't driven it yet.

Hi Lenny no I dont and that would be great to have one. I spent 4 hours yesterday powerwashing, cleaning, polishing, inspecting

and getting to know everything. Then I drove it down the road a few miles to the gas station she acturally ran 60mph but I was looking for a 6th gear. Got lots of looks and head turners. I was going to track down all the wiring and anf fill all the connectors with die electric grease but before I could my wife came out and said lets go muding. I was shocked I had not heard those words in ten years. So I jumped on that and away we went. When we came back we were drenched and totally covered in our black gumbo mud, we had not had so much fun and laughted so hard together in a long time, she even wants to help me clean it up.

I LOVE MY JOYNER!!!

This started back in the summer.
While on a ride with the wife. Applied the foot brake and the pedal went to the floor. Thought the brake pads were gone. Ordered new pads. Removed the wheels to install new pads and they were in good shape.
So I bled all 4 brakes cylinders. Got thin dirty fluid out. Almost like dirty water. No air. Got a good pedal.
Then about a month later, same thing, brake pedal back on the floor. Could pump the pedal and get a little pedal back. Bled again and finally got a good pedal. The fluid was nasty like before. No air. And the fluid was topped off in the reservoir before I started the bleeding process.
Now same thing. Pedal going back to the floor. Reservoir still full. I'm thinking the master cylinder is bypassing. So have a new on on the way and will report back.
What do you guys think. Could it be something else.
I used one of those hand operated vacuum pumps to pull the fluid out of the reservoir when I was bleeding before. First time I've used one. And after a small amount of fluid filled the catch bottle. Seemed like the vacuum pump quit working. Had to close the bleed screw. Pump the brake one time. The start the vacuum thing again.
Again just wondering what you guys think. Using DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluid. Whatever I can get at a reasonable price at parts store.

The conversion took about 350lbs. off the vehicle.  It never rode great, but now I feel every  crack in the road.  I have backed off spring compression nut to the point just under where they would move around if suspension was at full extension, but it is still very stiff.  I would like to put some softer coilover springs on it, but I have no idea what the spring rate is with the original springs so I would just be guessing on what to order.  Does anyone have the data for the original spring compression rate?  I am willing to give up a little ground clearance for a softer ride. Right now when sitting still the rear suspension is at or near full extension and the rear tires have several degrees of camber which will cause uneven wear if allowed to continue in this state.

I wouldn't say that after a year of owning this thing, that I would go out and buy one again. Certainly one that was used and abused, but at the time I needed something and this was in my price range. I could tell that it would need some work. I however didn't know the half of it. This was my second UTV. The first one was and older American Sportsworks Carbide 7150 that was a total piece of junk. I got it for next to nothing and was a project piece. I got it running and rode it for a bit but it was way not what i needed and it finally burned up and was set aside. Anyways, so I bought this one from a farmer. I'm not positive of the exact model but it originally came from Tractor Supply. per the stickers on the bed and its a camo color. Upon first inspection when I got it home, it was a mess.
      1. Had a water leak - The leak was in two hoses one of which was a short one that came from the rear of the engine and I literally ended up cutting it off. Well getting another one on there took hours and was simply horrible.
      2. Had an oil leak - This is my concern today as I was never able to figure out for sure what it was going to take to fix it. More on that in a min once you have a full account of where i've been in this thing.
      3. Had a bad clutch - Replacing the entirety of the clutch system wasn't all that bad except its a tight space to work in to do this repair. was a pain to figure out the angle that I needed to get the cover off and then back on again but figured it out the second day and got it done.
      4. Had bad Universal Joints - this was a nightmare because they originally put 18mm ujoints in the thing which I was not aware of so when my parts came in of course I had the 20mm that they started putting in, from what I can understand, was the very next year. Finding the 18mm ones was all but impossible so I bit the bullet and did the full conversion to the 20's.
      5. Had bad Tie Rods.  - Tie rods were not a problem. However while in there I noticed that it was a little low on brake fluid. The fluid that was in there looked fresh. Sure enough there was a line leak there so i had to get new lines for it. I almost just ordered the master cylinder at that time but had seen the  fluid coming from the other end and thought yeah it should  be ok. That was a stupid decision. Yet another parts order to get one. Once delivered it was not a prob just replace, fill, bleed and good to go.
      6. This was about the time the panic set in. I needed to check the other oils and the final gear oil was mostly empty and what was in there I'm still not was sure was gear lube. Luckily after clearing it out and refilling it, there didn't seem to be any issues with the final gear. So far that is.
      7. So at this point I figured that it was ready for my first trek with it to the  gold claim and off  we went. This was a 14 day venture in the middle of nowhere over 300 miles from home. I had tested it over the course of 5 days and except for the oil leak it looked like all was good with the exception of blowing a little smoke. Day two in the sticks it decided to just die on us out of the blue. I checked the spark and it wasn't there anymore. The plug wire had come apart. I made one that worked until I could get a replacement. It still wouldn't start but I was getting spark. ended having to remove the fuel pump and clean it up. I then had to pull the fuel injector. I don't know why it ran when it did. It took over 4 hours of running brake parts cleaner and air through it before I could get any fuel to go through it. Luckily after that most of a day delay, I'm glad to report that it did its job rather nicely for the remainder of the trip.
      8. After that ordeal and in the neighborhood of about $800 or so for parts and oils and all it looked a little brighter. I did still have not only the oil leak to fix, it started blowing more and more smoke. I keep the oil up but it uses quite a bit. if used in a whole day I'm adding at least a half quart. Its made three trips now in this described state. The only new things are that it has gotten very difficult to shift which is likely that pair of shifting gears, the blowing of smoke that is almost for sure a sign that I have to rebuild the top end including the top end kit and do the valves at the same time. Now the oil leak.
So this leak I don't quite know the part names but it is coming out from around the shaft coming from the front of the engine. My diagram does not seem to show that there is a bearing in there but I would think there has to be. So I can't order a part that doesn't seem to exist. Now the part I still can't figure out is am I going to have to pull the motor and split the case to do this repair or with the four bolts in the housing will this pop out into my hand and be a simple replacement? Of course after removing that shaft which of its own was no fun because of the requirement of almost having to remove the entire differential to get it out.
Sorry for the lengthy story but I think that it shows some of the pain of these things. I grew up riding dirt bikes, motorcycles, and three and four wheelers and I can say that none of them were ever as difficult to fix stuff as this Massimo is. Heck have done motorcycles from the frame up with modifications and it wasn't this difficult. Let me  qualify that statement, I'm speaking of Kawasaki, Honda, and Suzuki motorcycles only once did ever work on a Harley and thinking about it that was horrific as well.

Thanks for any words of wisdom besides junk this crap for a 17k to 30k upgrade. Only cause I'm 5'9 and my wife of 40 plus years is 6'1 and told me that i can't have the Kawasaki Teryx 1000 that I drool over. Getting old has really curbed her desire to deal with my toys over these four decades....
Thanks for listening I look forward to and replies... Jerry

I got an old 2003 Arctic Cat 375 Auto, and just bought a 2008 AC 650 side by side. Got a new starter, solenoid, and battery for the 650. Gonna change the crankcase oil and filter while I'm at it.
Anything I oughta watch out for from them that's done the starter/solenoid on this model?
Don't have a manual yet for the 650. Any recommendations for oil weight/grade?
      Thanks.
