As a mechanic I can't say enough about our honda talon 1000x-4 live valve. We aren't drag racing it so it has plenty of power for everything we do. We ride with a rzr 1000 and a can am maverick and go every place they do and sometimes more. We always keep up with no problems without having to ride hard. The actual transmission with gears and clutches are leagues above a belt driven machine in terms of reliability. You'll notice every place you ride sells belts for all belt driven models for a reason. Those owners always talk about how quick they can change a belt. I just do a clutch relearn every oil change and I'm good to go. Also engine oil runs the transmission so every service is replacing both. Simple and reliable. But that's just my opinion as a 25 year mechanic.

If anyone is looking for the cheapest UTV, with dump bed, winch, roof and windshield, I just noticed that lowes has the axis 500/ hisun UTV on sale for 4500 (at least in my area) They are $4500. ($9000 original). I have one - they have some issues, but nothing catastrophic. My biggest complaint is that it is under powered. Also the winch failed. They are still selling an extended warranty - which I would take, just in case. My guess is lowes wants them gone.

I have been doing a little research on which engine oil is best for UTV engines.Ā  There seems to be some disagreement over using a good quality regular engine oil, and the necessity of using "M2" (or wet clutch suitable) oil.Ā  My understanding is the "wet clutch" suitable oil has less friction reduction properties (hence a more responsive clutch with less slippage).Ā  While less friction reduction properties would seem to be better for the wet clutch... it would not be best for the internal engine parts like camshaft bearings and other moving parts where friction is detrimental and would lead to premature failure.Ā  Some folks swear you need M2 oil, while others say they have been using regular motor oil for years and their clutch is just fine.Ā  Could they both be right ???
      Any thoughts ?

So I'm interested in a side by side of some sort.
Not sure what make/model to even look at.

I would plan on riding on trails with very rough rocky terrain and plenty of mud. Maybe sand once in a long while. I like LOTS of power and drive fast, but also like a trail that is a challenge to get through. I think 4x4 would be a must. I like the idea of a supercharged engine, but I have never owned one, and would be a little concerned about long term reliability or expensive difficult engine repairs. If anyone knows quads, my favorite was the 2008 Polaris Outlaw 525 IRS. For dirt bikes, I raced a 2008 KTM 450 SX-F. So that gives you an idea of what type of off road stuff I liked.
I don't like "utility quads" or "trail bikes". And likewise, I dont want a turd UTV. I want something that looks awesome and performs awesome. 2 seater with some cargo capacity at the minimum.

Hey everyone ā€“ my name is Adam and Iā€™m doing some market research to better understand the ATV / UTV community. I'm especially interested in hearing about:
What you use your vehicle for (work, play, etc.)
      What youĀ loveĀ about it
      WhatĀ frustratesĀ you
What the overall experience of riding has been like
If you're open to hopping on a casual 30-minute Zoom or phone call sometime this week or next, Iā€™ll send you aĀ $100 gift cardĀ as a thank-you.
No sales, no pitchesā€”just listening and learning.Ā I'd also just ask that you send over a photo of you and your side-by-side in action (nothing formalā€”trail pics or selfies are totally fine!).
If you're down to chat, drop a comment or DM me and weā€™ll find a time that works. Would really appreciate the chance to learn from you šŸ™
      Thanks!
      ā€“ Adam
