possible substitute parts for Joyners

Ran across this information on another forum. Thought it could be quite valuable to owners.

Maybe this will help all the Joyner owners out, after hours and hours of research I found that the 2007 and older Chery engines are a clone of the ford's Britian CVH (escort) motor such as the 1.1, 1.3, 1.6 and 2.0. The great thing is that even though it was a clone of the Britian Ford CVH motor, they used 90% of the same parts as Ford U.S. CVH motor. The trannys are a VW model gear boxes with Ford bell housing. Least that is what mine is. Like the 650, 800 & 1100 are from a 1.1 to 1.3L VW golf. I have the 2006 1600 Joyner and my tranny is from a 97 VW Jetta. Now I'm not saying everything will bolt right up on the 650, 800 and 1100's you'd have to check that out yourself. But I know a friend that has a 800 Roketa and replaced transmission parts with a 1.3L VW golf. Another friend with a 2007 Joyner 1100 used gears and several other parts from a 1.3L Golf tranny. I have a 97 Jetta tranny that matches perfect to my 1600. I'm currently running a VW Jetta starter on my 1600. I bought several ford escort parts as replacement parts that fit perfect.

Just do some research or pull photos of the VW 1.3L tranny and you can compare what it looks like to what you have. Do the same on the engines. Google photo of the 1.1 or 1.3 and see if they don't look real close to what you have.

pghruby, where did you get this info from? The 1st time I fired up my Trooper, I thought it sounded like an Escort Rally car with a straight though exhaust. I have owned 1.1s, a 1.3 and a 1.6 Pommy (English))Escort cars and vans & raced a 2L so know a fair bit about them and the sound is bang on. Man if your right I'll be as happy as Tiger Woods wife just as she gets half of everything. Over here there are all kinds of mods for these engines and if I can tap into that she will be all smiles. These engines are still running strong after 42 years so I guess they copied a good one. These were fast cars that didn't break down. The T2s don't rev that high so if they are the same all be it a clone, there must be more in the engine somewhere. Cheers Mike.

I was always under the impression that these engines were Isuzu based. It gets quite convoluted since Suzuki and GM had joint ventures (which explains the Opel diagnostic protocols). Even VW and Subaru has joint ventures with Suzuki. The Geo Metro used the G10 engine that most people feel is the basis of the Chery engines.

Thanks pghruby, at least that clears that up. Looks like you can get a stock supercharger for them as stated here........ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_Minicab but they don't mention what engine size its for.

Cheers Mike.

So how do I get more torque? I raced SpecRacer Ford for years which was 1.6 Lt. Escort powered. We in the group never thought the thing had power and was always asking SCCA when they were going to replace the Escort with something that had power and didn't sound like a tractor. I know my clutch was larger on my SpecRacer and the injectors were different.

One thing you can do is match both the intake and exhaust ports. They mismatch as much as 3/16". When you match the ports going into the head, open up the ports giong to the valves themselves. Stay consious of head thickness where you cut. Flipping your intake to the top side should give a bit of benifit and eliminate the corragated hose on the intake. Also with it flipped, you can you can easily get at the throttle body and even the starter. I did read that the engine design is good to about 6000 rpms. If this is exceeded, it was sujested that different rods and pistons along with a steel crank be installed. Right =now we just need to keep scouring the internet until we actually find the the car model with the comparable engine that has exchanageable parts. If that ingine is popular, we should then be lead to available upgrade mods. Searched the internet for about 3 hours the other day and saw some things that looked close. the following is the engine we have I beleive with slightly different additions.

Hey Lenny, that's me talking to pghruby on Joyner Forum. I got a little excited and typed a reply before really thinking things through. The 1.1, 1.3, 1.6 and the 2L engines back then are generations away from the Chery 1.1, 1.6 and 2L Joyner have been using in recent years. What worked back then, might not work now. The first generation engines I was referring to where carbureted OHV engines, we have DOHC injected engines now. If Chery have based their engines on the original Ford engines(this is where I jumped to the wrong conclusion), it sure was a good one to copy, but they have updated all the components to such a stage where they would not have too much in common anymore.

pghruby was referring to the Ford U.S. CVH motor from the 80s & 90s, not the British OHV motor from the 60s & 70s(that I was) and a VW Jetta transmission so just take notice of his statement as mine is non-relevant.

rocmoc, there were 1.6 ford engines and 1.6 Ford engines back in the day and my memory of the Ford Escort 1.6 engine is the opposite of yours. It could be that you guys in the States had quicker engines of the same h.p that we didn't have, or us in N.Z, Australia and the UK had the know how to get the best out of these engines, I don't know. Did yours sound like this

Mate, if that sounds like your tractor, at least it's the best sounding Tractor around.

While I was playing around on YouTube I found this clip which I know most of you will enjoy

Make sure you watch part 2.

Cheers Mike.

Hello Mike,

First video; Sound is close but the video sounds better, more responsive.

Second video; Not the same engine. The engine is almost a mirror image. Our Escort engines were supplied by Ford USA but were actually the HPO Mexican Engine.

Double click on the YouTube screen to watch it from YouTube itself, then pause the video screen on UTV Board so you don't have two running together. In the format above, it hasn't got all the info on it. rocmoc, you will then see that I did cheat a bit, because in the 1st video it states, 'the greatest sound ever in a Mk1', so I got the best example to be fair.

In the 2nd video, it is actually a breakdown of a DOHC 4 cylinder engine, or our Chery 1.1 engine.

Cheers Mike.

The engine in the second video is more like the redesigned version of our engine. It used two cam driver pulleys rather then one like ours. Everything I could find with DOHC had this camshaft setup. The 1100cc are hard to find anymore in more current cars it seams but from 1.3 on up now use the DOHC setup with seperate driver pullys. Not sure why they made this change unless it was to go to rocker lifters rather then the cam lobes pushing directly on over the valves. Seems like our setup would be more efficient but then maybe they also changed the angle of the valves and it required the switch. Don't know, just guessing.

Hey guys new here got a 2013 joyner sand viper 1100. Only issues I've had is the clutch cable and starter. I recently purchased a starter for the Metro 1.1 and the top bolt lines up but the lower one is just a hair off so I couldn't use it. And the one for the Metro was a gear reduction and the other one from the joiner was a direct drive. I'm just trying to save a little money on the starter any suggestions to be much appreciated

I have a Joyner Trooper 1100 4 place that has been sitting for a number of years. I have everything taken care of but i can't get the fuel through the injectors. Fuel pump puts full pressure on them but they don't turn on or spray fuel. Any ideas?

2002 ranger 500 4x4 stopped running and wouldn't restart. Service manual wiring diagram helped identify the hub safety switch as the culprit. Using jumper wires to bypass  switch allowed the engine to start and run normally. Inspection of switch showed melted epoxy and a strong smell of burnt electrical. Unable to find replacement part either used or new. Is there a work around other than jumper wiring?

2021 Hisun Axis 500 UTV (From Lowes)
      Will NOT START
MY apologies if this is to much info just wanted to give yal the most information possible for help.
I'm a so called diyer. An Electrician by trade 21yrs. I got my S×S from my last job. The contractor purchased this S×S for this specific job brand new, from Lowes. They used it for hauling materials, tools, & a little bit of anything you can think of on an Industrial type job site.
I remember getting on the SxS one time & pushed the gas petal all the way to the floor & SxS had very little power.
So anyway ,when the job finished up back mid July this year (7/2024) , I asked the contractor what they was going to do with it. I was told to take it. Otherwise it would go to the contractors yard (storage yard) & most likely rust away.
Took it home washed it , it had a heavy coat of dust on it & in it dust was every where. My helper & I had to push it on the trailer to get it home.  After washing it throughly I let it sit & dry out for a good day and half, maybe 2 days. Before trying to start it. NO START. Will turn over & try to start but thats it.
So here's what I've purchased & installed. New Air Filter, new spark plug, new air idle control valve (AICV), new throttle position sensor, new throttle body, new oxygen sensor, new digital dash speedometer/fuel gauge/clock.
Also drained the old oil & gas & replaced with new oil & 93oct. gas. I should probably mention that I've changed the AICV twice. The 1st time I changed the AICV I was able to get the SxS started & let idle for at least 10-15min. Drove out of the garage, with very little power,  turned it around & barely got it back in the garage. That was the one & only time I've been able to start the SxS. I've also cleaned the Throttle Body and & intake with TB cleaner.  So after that the AICV was  making weird noise so I pulled it out & tried cleaning it, pretty sure I messed it up. So I purchased a Throttle Body that came with new AICV & TPS. Still NO START.  I've checked the fuel pump & the fuel injector.  I took the injector off still hooked up to wiring & turned the key over, the injector sprayed a lot of gas out kinda the size of a volleyball. I've also checked the clearance gap on the intake & exhaust valve. But today 11/2/2024 I'm going recheck spark plug gap & the valve gaps. And alot of other checking. Would the driver side seat belt have anything to do with it not starting?? I know the driver side seat belt has to be in gauged for full throttle "going fast". Thing is the drv. side seat belt will latch but feels like might be messed up inside of it. Tired opening it up but to no avail.  I've never had a S×S or 4wheeler so I was really excited when I got the S×S,not so much anymore.  I work on & fix my own vehicles usually no problems.  But this SxS is kicking my ass.
So if possible & someone could help me with some ideas or tell me what Im doing wrong or did wrong, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you for reading thus far.

We recently purchased the Axis x550. Fueled it with 93 fuel and drove one time around the farm and the 02 fault error appeared. Any ideas?
