What to look for used trooper

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am new to the board and hopefully about to be new to the side-by-side world. I have been looking for a sxs to take out and play here in Utah. After doing some research I am considering looking to find a used Joyner Trooper T2. I am aware of their history with business issues and that they may be just starting to return to the US hopefully. I really like a lot of the things the joyner offers over the rzr's and rhino's etc, especially the cost difference and sounds like they are better climbers.

What I was wondering is if anyone could tell me specific things to look at for an 09 trooper t2. I have found one in my area here in Utah and am going to look at it. Is there anything I should pay particular attention to or ask questions of the owner about? I have read somewhere that many of the problems with the differentials and other issues were worked out by 09? Is this correct? If I do purchase, are there things that I should address with this particular year/model before I take it out?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice you all may have.

Jeff

I am sure many will give you better advice on what to look for other then I but just a few from me.One of the first things is to change the air filter box and filter if it has not been done already and also move it from inside the engine compartment.I also have an 09 and have found that some have the upgrades and some do not.One thing was changing from the electric switch to manual lever on the 4 wheel drive.Again the diff upgrade is the same, not all 09 models have it(thats what i was told by a former Joyner tech) so you will have to check that out yourself or take the word of the seller if they know.Good luck with your purchase.I have not regreted the purchase of mine and love the way it climbs. You also have some great knowledgable members on this forum in Utah to hook up with.

Rick,

Thanks for the reply. So it sounds like if this one has the 3 levers I am probably ok or do I need to check regardless? Is there some kind of marking on the "weak" bolts that would let me know if this has been corrected or not if I do delve into the differentials?

You can do a search in this forum but if i recall you can look into the hole for the oil fill .Below is a link to another thread on this forum that explains it.

You can look into the oil fill plug and should be able to see the heads of the bolts holding the ring gear in place. If they have an 8.8 on the heads, it isn't upgraded. You would have to upgrade them yourself. Upgrade kits are available on Ebay. There are a lot of things that can be improved. Not all are necessary and some are a saftty issue and some a reliablility issue. Read the top threads of the forum for a fairly good ides of what to consider. You might just want to go through the forum threads. There is a lot of information available.

I always say to put a snorkel on and a good air filter, I have a K&N, but thinking to convert to some sort of dry paper like most cars have. Where you at in Utah, would you please fill out you profile so we can all know you a little better. Good name, :rolleyes:B)

Thanks for the info all. The troooper I was looking at didn't pan out. They decided to keep it--their son wanted it. So will keep looking. I am in the Sandy, UT area. Will keep you all posted on the search and am sure I will have even more questions when I find the right one.

I did have one more question now about my search. Would you all suggest the '09's are enough improved over previous years that I should limit my search to this year and try to find one with the upgrades or would a well cared for '08 be just as good? THanks for the advice.

(jmho) if you find a well cared for 08 that might have had the owner do some of the upgrades would be fine or a good price on a well cared for 08 and if you can do the upgrades.

Hi Jeff,

You might want to consider the Trooper I have for sale. I've done a lot of work on it to get it upgraded. It's now back to good running order and the price is right. Take a look at it in the classified section. You're within driving distance from me here in Tucson. If you'd like to talk to me give me a call on 520-885-6274. Some of the Trooper Guru's on the board were a big help in getting it back on the trail.

Thanks Rick, That's what I was thinking. Do you guys have any recommendations on the longevity of these things? What kind of miles/hours can you reasonably (and reliabley) expect to get from the driveline (engine/trans)?

Gumball--PM sent for some pics and info.

Jeff

too many factors to figure that out.I think it would depend on how its maintained, and type of driving. Its an automotive engine and trans so it would figure to last and be reliable.

Just received delivery of a 2024 AMP Pro.  Thought I'd start a thread with my impressions as I use it and learn more.  There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of real-world usage information out there on this model.  Hope this will help others as they research.
      Intended Use Cases
Fire mitigation / slash removal from a 5 acre forested and well-gamble-oaked property.  The previous owners thought as much about fire mitigation as I do about fashion: not much. Snow removal Stump pulling General hauling (rock, lumber, etc.) Weimaraner energy depletion.  Wasn't an original use case, but a nice added bonus.  Experiences So Far
Wasn't impressed that two of the bumpers on the underside of the bed where it sits upon the frame were missing.  The metal on metal contact has damaged the powder coating and the frame.  I expect a little better QC.
I've only put a few hours on it, so not a ton to report on usage.  It isn't quiet; it's silent.  I can't even detect an electric note from the motor. I removed (and subsequently replaced) the motor cover noticed that the motor is German and made by Schambuller.  The motor controller is Italian and made by Dana TM4.  Given the operating specs of both I found on the web, I suspect both are higher quality than the previous Navitas (which is supposed to be decent).  The motor is rated at 25 hp and 71.5 lb-ft of torque.  It feels very powerful.  All the torque is delivered instantly, if desired.
The bed is huge and has an electric dump as standard.  Great feature but would like it to go up a bit more.  Probably not feasible from an engineering perspective, but I want and I need ;).
Power steering is nice, but vague.  Probably common to many UTVs, but I am accustomed to more direct results from input.  Plan early and plan often.
In our first full day of usage, we hauled about 1/2 as much slash as the entire rest of the year when I was doing it by hand cart.  I may get fatter, but I'll also get more done.  After a few days of usage, the battery meter has gone down by 1/10th.
      Until next time...

We recently purchased the Axis x550. Fueled it with 93 fuel and drove one time around the farm and the 02 fault error appeared. Any ideas?
