OK fellow Joyner people! I have a Renegade R4 in the shop right now. The man brought it to me as a "no start"... he said he went trail riding and got it stuck very bad, he left it overnight. The next morning went to get it and it wouldn't start.. he drug it home and somehow came to the conclusion it needed a new ecm... he gets a new one hooked it up and still no start... this is when I get it.. the ecm is laying in the floor and the two ground wires are not hooked up.. I ground the two wires and boom it starts up.. but only running on two cylinders. From what wire diagrams I can find the trooper has two coil drivers and the renegade has three. I have checked the coil and all the wires and all is good. I am not getting pulse from the ecm for the third coil... the old ecm cover was sitting in the floor so I compared the numbers, totally different! Called the place he ordered the ecm from and they are telling my the old number superseded to the new one I have. I checked the ecm on my trooper and the numbers match perfectly. So what I am saying is the new ecm they sent is a match for a trooper ecm... are they the same?

Thanks for any help!

Josh

If the numbers are the same, they are for the Trooper and that would explain the running incorrectly. Otherwise, the ECU looks for information from the tach and cam positon sensor to initiate spark. You might check there for a bad connection. Make sure your grounds are solid to the engine and ground the exterior of the ECU.

I'm working with a 2015 MSU-500.  Basic symptoms are it cranks well, but will not fire.  It has spark, and it has fuel spraying out of the injector (and spraying starting fluid into the throttle body and plug hole makes no difference).  It has compression.  I bought it not running, and no other information was available.  It has 775 miles on it and 127 hours.  It looks to be in very good shape.   Previous owner replaced fuel pump, ECU, coil, plug, and the fuse/relay box that mounts on the firewall, then gave up.
My questions relate to cam/valve timing, considering the symptoms and diagnostics so far.  My thinking was the woodruff key sheared off and the crank spun, making it out of time.  My question is, by the pictures attached does anyone have an opinion as to the cam/valve timing being correct?  In the crankshaft picture you can see a timing mark visible.  In the camshaft picture I have arrows directed towards what I think are timing marks (which appear to be exactly 180 degrees from one another).  However, the long arrow in what appears to be bolt configuration in line with the piston/rod line.  Here is a puzzling note... in the position you see in the pictures... I have valve lash on both the intake and exhaust.  I think it's at TDC, given the visible crank timing mark and valve lash on both valves.
Any thoughts ?  Does this appear to be in proper valve time ?  Have I missed anything simple ?  Thanks in advance for your input.

Looking for information on installing a OBD port or a lite to read codes in ECM.
I can not find a OBD port or a lite to read codes on this R2 with 800cc.
I have code readers and adapters for most ATV's. From what I've found so far. They don't have a connection for to read codes. I may be wrong. That's why I'm asking.
This R2 has had new IAC, TPS, MAP, fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump replaced. This was done by neighbor to try to stop surging. It still surges on start up and then settles down. But once you hit the accelerator it revs up to 2000+ rpm and stays till you block off IAC port in throttle body with finger. Once you do that it once again settles down and idles perfectly.
I want to know what the ECM is reading to help dio it.
This joyner is the first one I've run across. Well second one in a week. (my neighbors 2 of them) The other was a trooper with the 1100cc chery motor that had been setting for years. After cleaning up the fuse box connections. It runs like a top. Had to replace all gages with aftermarket gages. Water, oil, gas, amp. Only problem one was the water temp using original sending unit. Had to install 150 ohm resistor on the input wire to get it to read correctly + - 5 degrees. Close enough. Gas sending unit was/is for a boat tank 6" tall. All SS so it should last forever.
      thanks Dan D. aka staind
