Evolved from a simple napkin sketch to a purpose built two-seat utility vehicle, Kawasaki revolutionized the side-x-side (SxS) utility vehicle segment with the introduction of the MULE 1000, 30 years ago. Kawasaki saw a need in the market that was being underserved by the ATV segment, which generated the idea for a two-seat, four wheel utility vehicle.

It took nearly seven years of development by Kawasaki’s Research and Development team to bring the first MULE 1000 SxS to production in 1988. The design team worked through a variety of engines and designs, to meet the needs of the ranchers and farmers eventually incorporating a 454cc liquid-cooled parallel twin, which was taken from its cruiser lineup. The engine was large enough to support the 500lb carrying capacity and two riders, and quiet enough not to scare animals out on the farm, according to the company.

Codenamed “Pony” by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, LTD in Japan, a production name was needed for the new utility vehicle. The advertising agency for Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. at the time, Bozell Advertising, pitched using the acronym Multi-Use Light Equipment or MULE for the new SxS line – thus the MULE was born.

Today, the MULE has evolved with the inclusion of four-wheel drive, locking differentials and other advanced features. But at the heart of every MULE (which are assembled in Lincoln, Neb.) is the company’s original 30-year old SxS in a growing powersports category.

I just picked up this project that I was told would crank, but not start.  This is what I’ve figured out so far….
I installed a new battery and get all dash lights, head lights, and brake lights on when turning the ignition on.  Fuel pump even turns on.  It does not crank with the key, but would when I jumped the starter solenoid, so I replaced it…..no change.
Figured I’d check for spark and compression while I was dorking around.  Compression is 150 psi, but there is no spark.  Replaced the spark plug… no change.
So, is my new starter solenoid bad?  Could it be the brake or gear position switches even though the brakes and neutral lights come on?  Not sure where to go from here.

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone pressure washes their Mule underbody. Three years in, I have yet to do this. I'm worried that the pressure washer could damage or dislodge something but it's gotten to the point that it could use a bath. Any thoughts?

My dad has recently acquired a 2510 Kawasaki mule Diesel powered. It worked fine  few weeks and then quit driving. Put a new belt on just to see. Still not driving. It already had a new clutch. Belt turns when in drive or reverse and back wheels are off ground to test. But wheels not turning. Thoughts?

Hello, I have a mule 4010 trans that appeared to overheat based on the temperature light on the dash and it went into limp mode.  No steam though.  After letting it cool and the next day, I drove it around quite a bit and it did not have any problems.  Any ideas on this.  Do thermostats work intermittently?  I would like to fix the problem, looking for advice.  Many thanks
