HS400/550 Dexron 3 ATF in front differential...

In a recent thread fellow forum member mcraigchr asked about Hisun's recommendation to use Dexron 3 ATF in the front differential--I had noted that in the latest SM I received for my HS400 (a "UT400"as labeled by Coleman) that was also the recommendation. AS it was in conflict with other information in the manual I contacted both Coleman and Hisun who both verified the recommendation.

from the HS400 SM¹:

from the HS550/750 SM¹ (same table obviously):

I did not find this at all odd, as ATF is used in many high torque gearboxes and manual transmissions--it is VERY heat and wear resistant with additives intended to protect the sliding contact of helical gear sets as well as excellent protection for ball bearings, and bushings.

I had replaced the front diff juice on my 2020 HS400 to 75W-90 SAE GL-5 gear oil at 20 hours (per OM "break-in" recommendations) and decided I would use Dex 3 at the "next change". Today in a bout of ambition I did just that--then took off for a 5 mile ride to see "what was what?"

My first impression was that the differential was noticeably quieter and smoother, after riding a couple miles I stopped and engaged 4WD--as I had suspected 4WD engagement with the ATF was much improved, no need to blip the throttle (or drive a few feet) to get it in or out of 4WD as had been the case with the gear oil. The front differential lock also engaged much more positively and smoothly.

FWIW I used Valvoline DEx/Merc Full Synthetic MaxLife ATF (fully Dexron 3 compatible)--it took about 19 ounces to fill it to the botom of the filler opening (the OM says 9.6 oz.; on my first change I drained out 18 oz. or so).

So, bottom line; highly recommended!

¹ - "Dextron" with a "t" is a very common misspelling/mispronunciation of "Dexron"--I guess because so much contemporary stuff is named "somethingtron" I have even seen it on many sites that should REALLY know better.

I suppose this would also be applicable to the Massimo Buck 400?

The MSU400 (which is a re-branded Hisun HS400) probably--the Buck 400 maybe not. After Hisun (Chongqing Huansong Industries (Group) Co., Ltd.) cut Massimo loose for poor customer service in 2018 they scrambled to find other suppliers--according to the EPA emissions certification database the 2018 through 2020 Buck 400 was made by the Taizhou Nebula Power Co., Ltd. (<-- this is a link to their Alibaba presence, probably where Massimo found them).

The EPA certification sticker on your Buck should tell you who made it:

You need to check with Massimo...

I added lights to the Coleman Outfitter 550 last fall. I bought lights on line from Nilight, a 300 W 12" light bar mounted forward and 2 square 4" floods for the rear. Those are mounted on the roof corners facing rear and downward just beyond the tailgate. Nilights seem to be of high quality, as I've had them on my garden tractor for 5 years and still flood the way ahead with great light.
Both the front and rear lights provide amazing illumination making the OEM headlamps look like parking lights. Made a connector for the front bar that plugs into existing headlamp switch so it is just part of that circuit controlled by the headlamp switch. Rear work lamps were wired in using a rocker switch installed in the dash. Backed up to the garden with the work lights and was able to harvest some tomatoes well past sunset.
What have you used if anything for auxiliary lighting on your UTV?

      Hi All,
Just picked up a 2020 UT400 that my 80 year old father will be driving around the farm. We purchased the machine with a few "issues" and they lowered the price accordingly. Small stuff like passenger size mirror and back reflector was torn off by a Tractor supply employee, which we will order replacements for. Also after further inspection, whoever assembled it did not put a few bolts in the rollcage and aren't in the glovebox, so will be having to order those also.
Anyway, there are two initial things on the UT400 I'm not sure what they are or for. The first, there is a square white electrical connector with about 8 pins hanging form under the middle of the back bed - I don't see another one to match up or plug into it, so wondering if this is pre installed optional connection for like towing around a sprayer? Anyone know what this is? Also, there is a 10 inch black rubber hose that is zip tied to the back A frame on the passenger side. I watched the assembly video and it doesn't mention one, so don't know what this hose is for - anyone know?
Also, has anyone come up with a "fix" or work around for having to have the seatbelts plugged in or even in place? We aren't planning on using them and are figuring just plugging them in and wedging them behind the seats - didn't know if there is a way to just disconnect the "over 10mph gas starving" safety sensor.
Looking forward to seeing how this machine does for my father. I'm thinking about installing a suicide knob on it for easier turning for him, as it's a little stiff (compared to our Kawasaki Mule). Maybe with use it will loosen up some?
      Thanks!

starts up you have keep rpms up for 5 minutes till it warms up then runs fine. But if it stalls wont start unless you unplug fuel pump and hold it to the floor till it starts then plug pump back in and run it till it warms up then it is fine all day.
